Sustainability in logistics: advancements and challenges in Mexico
Written by María Gamba
Talking about sustainability is no longer a luxury or a trend. It is an urgent need. And in a country like Mexico, where logistics is a pillar of trade, industry, and economic growth, it is essential to ask ourselves: how can we move the world without destroying it?
Sustainable logistics is nothing more than transporting goods, storing products, and coordinating supply chains while also considering the environment, people, and the future. Yes, it is possible. And yes, in Mexico there are already concrete examples that this can work. But there is also a long way to go.
Mexico facing the green challenge
At an international level, demands have changed. Companies around the world are adopting sustainable policies to be able to export to countries with strict environmental regulations. Mexico, as an important player in global trade and a driver of nearshoring in Latin America, must adapt if it wants to remain competitive.
But what is really being done?
In recent years, interesting projects have been developed in different regions of the country. Some distribution centers, for example, already operate with solar panels and intelligent refrigeration systems. Several transport companies have incorporated electric vehicles into their fleets, especially on urban routes. And the use of recyclable or reduced-size packaging is beginning to be part of the norm for many retail brands.
These are advances that, although not yet widespread, show a clear trend:Mexican logistics is moving towards sustainability.
Beyond the advances: the challenges
However, talking about sustainability in logistics is also talking about real obstacles. For many small and medium-sized businesses, access to ecological technologies remains limited by costs. The country's infrastructure, especially outside of large cities, does not always allow for the implementation of solutions such as charging stations for electric vehicles or efficient recycling systems.
There is also a significant gap in public policies. There is a lack of clear incentives to encourage more companies to make the change. And beyond that, there is a lack of information. Many times, logistics leaders want to make more responsible decisions, but they don't know where to start.
What can a company do today?
Sustainability is not an unattainable goal nor a change that is made overnight. It is about small decisions that, added together, make a big difference.
Measuring the carbon footprint, optimizing routes to avoid unnecessary trips, training personnel in responsible practices, choosing less polluting packaging, reducing energy consumption in warehouses... everything adds up.
And most importantly: choosing strategic allies who share that same commitment.
The commitment of Control Terrestre

A future in motion
Sustainability is not just about caring for the environment. It is about caring for people, the country, and businesses in the long term. It is understanding that what seems like an expense today will be a competitive advantage tomorrow.
Mexico has everything to become a benchmark in green logistics. The talent, the strategic location, the creativity, and the need are there. All that is missing is will and action.
And as always, the best time to start is now.
