Maritime Navigation and Commerce Law

The Maritime Navigation and Commerce Law is legislation in Mexico that regulates all activities related to navigation, maritime commerce, and port operations. Its main objectives include: Guaranteeing maritime safety: Establishes standards for the operation of vessels, ports, and cargo transportation, promoting safety and protection standards. Fostering maritime commerce: Regulates commercial activities carried out on seas, navigable rivers, and lakes in the country, facilitating import and export operations. Protecting the environment: Imposes measures to prevent and control marine pollution derived from maritime activities. Defining jurisdictions and competencies: Specifies the attributions of maritime authorities, such as the Ministry of the Navy (SEMAR) and the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT). The law also addresses aspects such as vessel registration and matriculation, seafarer training, maritime transportation contracts, and cargo insurance. This legislation is fundamental for maintaining the competitiveness of the Mexican maritime sector and its integration into international trade.
