The world is going through a decisive moment. International supply chains are facing pressures due togeopolitical instability, inflation, energy transitionand the impact of climate phenomena that are forcing countries to rethink the way they relate to each other. In this scenario, Mexico has ceased to be just a trading partner for the United States and Canada: today it presents itself as astrategic bridge to Europe and Asia, with the potential to become a protagonist in the configuration of a new, more resilient and sustainable global economy.

This relevance was reaffirmed during the4th Binational Convention of the American Society of Mexico (AmSoc), entitled"New routes and bridges of progress", where ambassadors from Italy and Switzerland highlighted Mexico's central role in international trade, innovation, and sustainability.

Mexico and the European Union: towards a new generation agreement

The Italian ambassador to Mexico,Alessandro Modiano, underlined that the modernization of thetrade agreement between Mexico and the European Union, scheduled for 2026, will not be a conventional treaty, but anext-generation agreement.

This new framework seeks to go beyond traditional trade flows and incorporate issues such as:

  • Technological innovation and digitalization
  • Energy transition and clean energy
  • Sustainability in production chains
  • Academic and cultural cooperation

Mexico has positioned itself as a priority partner in this European diversification strategy, in a context where countries seek to reduce their dependence on Asia and bet on markets with stability and growth potential.

"We want more Mexicans in Europe and more Europeans in Mexico, because this type of cooperation endures over time and builds cultural and economic bridges," said Modiano.

Switzerland: investment and innovation as axes of collaboration

For his part, the Swiss ambassador to Mexico,Pietro Piffaretti, highlighted that his country is among theten main investors in Mexico, thanks to the confidence generated by the business environment and the support of local partners.

ThePositive Agendathat guides the bilateral relationship between both countries is based on four fundamental pillars:

  • Innovation
  • Sustainability
  • Youth training
  • Transparency

Switzerland sees in Mexico a strategic ally not only for trade, but also to strengthenmultilateralismin an international environment marked by uncertainty and fragmentation. Issues such as theclimate agenda, human rightsandtransparencyare areas where Mexico is projected as a reliable partner.

Global context: why is Mexico at the center of the map?

The attention that Mexico receives from European diplomats is no coincidence. Globally, supply chains are undergoing accelerated reconfiguration due to three major trends:

  1. Geopolitics and risk diversification:The war in Ukraine, the trade tension between the United States and China, and the conflicts in the Middle East force the diversification of strategic partners. Mexico emerges as a solid alternative for Europe.
  2. Nearshoring and regionalization:The relocation of manufacturing operations from Asia to North America places Mexico as a natural platform for export to the United States and, at the same time, a logistics partner for Europe.
  3. Sustainability and energy transition:International commitments to reduce emissions force companies to work with countries that offer not only competitive costs, but also policies aligned with sustainable development.

In this context,Mexico is not only a trading partner, it is a strategic node in the construction of a new global logistics architecture.
