Air Waybill
TheAir Waybill (AWB), also known asair waybill, is an essential document in air logistics. It is a contract between the shipper (consignor) and the airline that will transport the goods. This document serves as a receipt for the goods accepted for transport and details the conditions under which the shipment will be carried out.
Main functions of the Air Waybill:
- Proof of contract of carriage:Establishes the terms and conditions of air transport between the shipper and the airline.
- Receipt of goods:Acts as proof that the airline has received the cargo in good condition and ready for transport.
- Instruction guide:Contains detailed information about the shipment, such as the destination, the shipper, the consignee, the contents, and special handling conditions.
- Tracking document:Allows tracking of the cargo during its transport and provides information on its status in real time.
- Basis for customs:Facilitates customs procedures, as it contains relevant information such as the description of the goods, the declared value, and the shipper and consignee data.
Information included in an AWB:
- Air Waybill number:Unique code to identify the shipment.
- Shipper and consignee data:Names, addresses, and contacts.
- Details of the goods:Weight, dimensions, quantity, and description of the goods.
- Handling instructions:Special requirements such as fragile handling or refrigerated transport.
- Flight details:Date, airline, and route of transport.
- Costs:Transportation rates and other applicable charges.
Characteristics of the AWB:
- Non-negotiable:Unlike the maritime bill of lading (Bill of Lading), the AWB cannot be negotiated or transferred to another consignee.
- Multiple copies:It is issued in several copies, intended for the shipper, the airline, the consignee, and others involved in the logistics chain.
Importance of the AWB in logistics:
The Air Waybill is crucial to ensure traceability and legal compliance in air shipments. It provides transparency and security in logistics operations, allowing goods to reach their destination efficiently and in accordance with international regulations.
