Family Day: The Vital Role of Families in the Fight against Climate Change

The Impact of Climate Change on Families and the Land Control Commitment: Celebrating International Day of Families

Climate change is more than an environmental phenomenon; It is a crisis that deeply affects families around the world. From pollution to exacerbated natural disasters, its effects are increasingly evident in our communities and homes. In this context, families play a crucial role both as victims and agents of change in the fight against this global phenomenon.

Rising global temperatures and extreme weather patterns disproportionately impact families, especially those in vulnerable socioeconomic situations. Extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, droughts and floods, not only endanger the physical safety of families, but can also cause forced displacement and loss of livelihoods. Furthermore, environmental degradation and scarcity of natural resources negatively affect the health and well-being of families, exacerbating poverty and food insecurity.

To effectively address climate change, it is essential to empower families through education, changing consumption habits and raising awareness. Families, as the fundamental nucleus of society, have the power to influence environmental policies and practices at the local and global levels. From teaching children about the importance of sustainability to adopting greener living habits, families can play a key role in the transition to a more sustainable future.

History of International Family Day

International Family Day is celebrated on May 15 each year to raise awareness about the fundamental role of families in the education of children from early childhood, and the lifelong learning opportunities that exist for boys and girls. and the young people.

Although the concept of family has been transformed in recent decades, evolving according to global trends and demographic changes, the United Nations considers the family to be the basic unit of society. In this context, International Family Day gives us the opportunity to recognize, identify and analyze social, economic and demographic issues that affect their development and evolution. For this reason, to celebrate this day, activities are organized, such as workshops, conferences, radio and television programs, among others, with the aim of promoting and promoting the maintenance and improvement of the family unit.

In the 1980s, the United Nations began to focus on family issues. In 1983, following the recommendations of the Economic and Social Council, the Commission for Social Development, through its resolution 1983/23 on the role of the family in the development process, requested the Secretary-General to promote “among those responsible for adopting decisions and public awareness of family problems and needs, as well as effective ways to meet those needs.

Later, the Council, in its resolution 1985/29, requested the General Assembly to consider including in its provisional agenda for the forty-first session the item entitled “Families in the development process”, with the idea to request the Secretary-General to initiate a process to raise awareness of this issue among Governments, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, and the public.

Finally, in its resolution 44/82 on December 9, 1989, the General Assembly proclaimed the International Year of the Family. Later, in 1993, with resolution A/RES/47/237, it decided to celebrate International Family Day every May 15, in order to raise awareness of issues related to families and reflect on how they affect them. social, economic and demographic processes.

On September 25, 2015, the 193 Member States unanimously adopted the Sustainable Development Goals, a set of 17 goals aimed at eradicating poverty, discrimination, abuse and preventable deaths, addressing environmental destruction and initiating a era of development for all the inhabitants of the planet. Families and the policies that address the issues that affect them are key to achieving many of these goals.
